June 25, 1950

Sixty-two years ago today, the Korean War began.

Please take the time to remember the soldiers who fought and died

And the veterans who are elderly now and still suffering.

Please remember the Koreans who suffered during the war

And the families still torn apart after all these decades.

Don't forget the Forgotten War.

My father served in the US Navy during the Korean War. I recently requested his paperwork from the military archives and found out several things I didn't know about him, like where he was working prior to enlisting (he was a high school principal in a tiny little school in back-of-beyond Alabama). The war was over before he and Mom married (Dec. 1953), but he was still stationed in Boston. She used to tell me stories about the culture shock of going from Alabama to Boston -- said people would make her repeat things just to hear her accent.

Dad's been gone sixteen years now, and it still seems like yesterday.

My dad was in the Naval Reserves until some time in the early 80's, I think, but he would have been too old to be called up for Vietnam (he was 41 in 1965). He also served with the Marines in WWII. My uncle, OTOH, did the Vietnam thing (Army).

Dad's birthday is International Talk LIke a Pirate Day. I think it would have amused him.
