My Reaction To What Has Befallen The Arrows

Okay, so DC first lops off Roy's arm? Now THEY KILL HIS DAUGHTER? They make Ollie a killer? They destroy Star City and millions of people?

Can someone honestly tell me why DC has become so bloodthirsty in recent years? Is that what sells comics? Pretty sad commentary on our society, 'fraid to say.

It just makes me more convinced than ever that ignoring canon is the best thing for my fanfic. Bah! on DC and their fridging ways.

Ollie's killed before, so killing now is old news. Bah. Stupid storyline I will not read. D:

and just when I was seriously thinking of coming BACK to comics.

Christ, DC.

The only thing I have a problem with is Lian. Ollie's killed before, and in the DCU, a lost arm can be replaced pretty easily.

But killing one of the coolest little girls in comics, all for some cheap angst? Disgusting. No. Just no. She grows up, becomes Speedy, joins the Teen Titans, and dates Milagro Reyes. That is all. :p

This is something that I've been a part of the discussion in many conversations before. My feeling is that... Americans are so... 'they' like their violence, car chases, sex and explosions so much that it is taking 'Hollywood' and other forms of media -- like comic books -- more and more of all the above to keep their attention.

It's one of those catch 22 situations. "Violence begets violence" could actually be considered true here I suppose...

But *that's* my opinion and I don't make my opinions policy /smirked chuckle.

I've been a lurker here, mostly only reading the Rainbow storyline - but since this resonates with what's happened to my current primary fandom... (see icon!) - You have my sympathy. Truly.

^__^ I was wondering, I'm not sure it will exactly cheer you up...o.O cos it's not a happy fic, it's oozing with Bruce and Dick cuteness (even managed to somehow slightly slash it) ...but I drabbled today and didn't know if you wanted to read it!?

It's here if you do: http://community.livejournal.com/rgsbatmanfics/7583.html

(I can fan art you (or at least attempt) a Green Arrow fanart of your choice as long as you have pictures for me to copy off of and an idea ;) )

There's a reason I stopped reading comics. Marvel and DC both seem to think that horrible depressingness is what sells. :-(

[identity profile] dinahqueen.livejournal.com 2010-03-05 05:39 am (UTC)(link)
I've taken to using the Mythbuster's approach on canon...

I reject your reality and replace it with my own.

Canon just sucks.

First Boomer. Now Lian! :( -shakes fist- Damn you, DC.

Lian? What the hell, DC. I don't even follow the Arrows and I know that Lian is made of awesome.

New low DC, new low. =(

[identity profile] ava-jamison.livejournal.com 2010-03-05 09:35 pm (UTC)(link)
I HATE that they've become so bloodthirsty. I hate that the heroes are acting more and more like bad guys. Bruce waterboarded somebody not long ago. Yeah. Batman waterboarded somebody. Damian calls Dick an idiot when Dick is hurt and drugged up. Robin calls Batman an idiot and it gets cheered by fans, some of whom find it hilarious. Dick, as Batman, beat up a guy recently to get info. And didn't get any info. And didn't feel bad about beating up the poor guy.

WTF?

[identity profile] ava-jamison.livejournal.com 2010-03-05 11:19 pm (UTC)(link)
Sorry if I bummed you out by telling you. I shall try to contain myself. It's not right, though. I so want the pendulum to swing back. I thought the nineties were supposed to be the gritty, extreme years.

*hopes*

I haven't read Cry for Justice(and don't intend to) but the outrage over Lian's death has been all over the DC boards. I feel it's incredibly wrong to kill a child just to create angst and I liked the idea of a superhero as a single dad. But some of the cynics on there are sneering at any outrage by saying that it's just a comic and people die all the time.

I don't usually care too much when characters are killed off in comics, even when it's characters I like, but I dislike deaths that I feel are gratuitous and are just there for shock value. There was a scene in one of the X-Men comics where a hate group crucified a group of minor mutant characters on wooden "X's" and I hated it because it just felt so wrong and pointless.

That's how I feel about Lian's death but I also know it's not enough to get me to stop reading comics. There have been times when I was ready to give up on certain titles but there's always enough I like about them to keep me going. I'm hoping after Blackest Night, DC will be a little less dark as they claim they're going to hold off on deaths for a while. We'll see how long that lasts.

[identity profile] ladyblkrose.livejournal.com 2010-03-06 06:21 am (UTC)(link)
They WHAT??? Killed off Lian? Damn. I use to be a big comics fan before college and tapered off due to financial reasons. Tried to come back but couldn't get past the gritty 90's. Too bad I didn't know that the 21st century would be worse or I might have enjoyed the 90's more. DAMN what the frell were they thinking...opps my bad, we're talking about DC (not that Marvel is the good twin). I thank God for fandom (for real, I thank God for your stories)
As for DC...LA LA LA LA LA I don't hear you, I don't hear you LA LA LA LA LA
The only good thing about this is that in comics, death is rarely permanent.

[identity profile] bat-angelwings.livejournal.com 2010-03-06 07:26 am (UTC)(link)
I'm not surprised they, being Dan Didio and Geoff Johns killed Lian.
You could see that coming in the past few month. A Titan comic featuring Lian and Roy for 22 pages at home? BAAAAAD sign.
Lian's mom suddenly appearing after all that years and fighting Roy on an "accidentally leaked" cover?
All that buzz that Roy would go "to the Dark Side", what else would push him then loosing Lian?

Obviously they think the only way to get some reaction from the reader is to kill someone and then some time later some idiotic resurrection happens.

Guess who will suffer that fate next? Chances are our Mr. Grayson will. Didio is known for not understanding the Nightwing persona. To him Dick is in his own words: "not Batman and Robin no more" translation: no purpose for Dick Grayson.
It's typical to feature the next one to die first prominently and then the killing blow lands.

If Bruce returns maybe exactly that will happen to Dick, since at DC they love that damn Jason Todd so much.

*Argh* Sorry for the rant, but you can tell that after Ms. Kahn left DC fell into the hands of people who think death is just a good tool to tell stories.

And now they managed to get rid of Paul Levitz, so rest assured the new DC would be even more bloodier to attract those PC and X-box gamers who love to play those idiotic killing games.
I truly wish those guys would enlist and see if they still like it if the threat is real as in Iraq or Afghanistan and people around you die for real.

You think Smallville is dark? Wait and see, they will find a way to make comics even darker, and what really saddens me, those books will sell like sliced bread.

Obviously the "target group" wants to see bloodshed 24/7 and anti-heroes instead of heroes.
I refuse the read most of the comic boards on the net these days, because half of the people writing there argue the Bats should start killing and more loony stuff.

:( This does make me horribly sad, and I'm generally pretty ambivalent to Arrows. It's pretty sad that the whole purpose of Lian's existence can be reduced to canon fodder.
