AN ENGAGING ANNOUNCEMENT
The Manor was filled with cheerful hubbub. Alfred was in his element as majordomo, directing people to their rooms and readying hors d’oeuvres in the kitchen, supervising Clark and Dick. The house was spotless, the decorations were up, and the food had been stocked.
Halloween Week was in full swing.
Alfred bustled into the kitchen without seeming to bustle. “Everything ready?”
“Yes, sir,” Dick chirped.
“Refreshments will be served in the library once everyone is in there. The unpacking is being done, and Jamie, Roy, and Melody will be down shortly.”
Clark and Dick nodded. They had trays of food and drink ready, and now just had to wait.
“Roy says Mistress Dinah is going to make an announcement,” Dick said.
“We shall see,” said Alfred.
& & & & & &
Dinah and Ollie sat on the couch with Steve, Hal, and Diana on the other one, and Bruce and Lex in the two overstuffed chairs. Clark and Dick served the refreshments and went back to the kitchen.
Dinah lifted her glass of wine. “Lady and gentlemen, Ollie and I have an announcement to make.”
“Oh?” Lex asked.
Dinah smiled and nodded. “We are engaged to be married.”
Applause and excited exclamations broke out. Congratulations showered down on the happy couple.
“When’s the big day?” Lex asked.
“Next September. We’ll be sending out the invitations when we get back home so you plan accordingly. You will come, won’t you, Lex dear?”
He laughed. “Of course! And I know it’ll be a slave-friendly wedding, so Jamie and I will be there will bells on.”
“I’d like to see Jamie with bells on,” Hal said, laughing as Diana jabbed her elbow into his ribs.
Lex chuckled. “Believe me, he can dance with the best of them, and in nothing but bells…oh, yeah.” Grins went all around the room. “But, seriously, Dinah, that’s great news. With that kind of lead time, I assume this is a top-notch Society bash?”
She nodded. “You’d be correct, Lex.” She smiled at Ollie. “It’s required for Star City’s favorite son.”
Ollie took her hand and kissed it. “All for you, my love.”
“Very good, Ollie. You’re learning,” Bruce said dryly.
“Hey!”
Dinah smiled at her fiance’s indignation.
Fiance. I like the sound of that.
& & & & & &
“See? I toldja there would be a big announcement,” said Roy.
“You sure were right.” Dick munched on a canape. “Boy, it’s gonna be a big deal, isn’t it?”
“The biggest.” Roy rolled his eyes. “You know these big Society weddings.”
Dick grinned. “Lots of fuss ‘n’ feathers, huh?”
“It’s good fuss ‘n’ feathers,” Melody interjected.
Roy smirked. “Spoken like a girl.”
Melody sniffed and flounced off as the boys giggled.
“How droll,” said Alfred. “You young gentlemen are aware that you will be a major part of this production, don’t you?"
“I’m already the ring bearer,” Roy said proudly. “And Melody’s the flower girl.”
“I don’t have a big role, Alfred,” said Dick.
“You would be surprised at the way a Society wedding draws in all around them. You will be part of this extravaganza, believe me.”
“Well, that would be okay with me. I like a big show!”
“Quite,” Alfred said dryly.
& & & & & &
Jamie watched as Clark prepared some of the hors d’oeuvres. Alfred wanted a few extra, and Clark was happy to oblige.
There’s something different about him. That information Lex and I sent Bruce must have at least put questions in their minds. I wonder if they got answers.
Jamie noticed how relaxed Clark was, from easy smiles to the way he went about his duties. Clark had always seemed relaxed here at the Manor, but there was an extra layer of serenity about him, of that Jamie was certain.
Something’s changed, whether it’s what we suspect or not.
“Jamie?”
“Hmm?”
“You okay?” Clark was looking at his friend in concern.
“Oh, sure. Guess I was just drifting off.”
“Been there,” Clark said with a laugh.
“Ah, yes, daydreaming. A wonderful art.” Jamie leaned one elbow against the counter, sunlight glinting off his silver bracelets. “You seem in very good spirits.”
“It’s the time of year.” Clark arranged the canapés on the silver platter.
“Autumn can sure get the blood going, but you seem in great health, too.”
“It’s one of my lucky days, I guess.”
Jamie was sure that he saw Clark’s eyes flicker, but he said, “That’s great! I know how sick you can get. Healthy days are always to be treasured.”
The sun’s rays touched Clark’s skin, burnishing it to a warm gold as prisms of color danced off his rainbow manacles, creating sparkles of light on the walls and ceiling. He looked beautiful.
Wonder if his body’s absorbing the sun right now, or is still being suppressed by the Rainbow K.
Jamie shivered as he remembered Lionel walking in on Lex and him the other day. Lionel was groping him less, but he still didn’t trust him.
“Hey, are you sure you’re okay?” Clark touched Jamie’s arm. “You’re cold. Would you like a sweater?”
“I’ve got one in my room. I’ll go get it.”
“Good. I’ll have some hot chocolate waiting for you when you get back.”
Jamie gave Clark a quick smile and left the kitchen. He could hear laughter and voices drifting down the hall from the library as he ascended the grand staircase.
As he walked down the hall of the second floor, he rubbed his arms. He was cold. A sweater would be just the thing.
In the guest room that he was sharing with Lex, he dug a sweater out of a dresser drawer and pulled it on, feeling warmer immediately. Even with an excellent heating system, a huge place like this could be drafty.
He glanced out the window, seeing two of Bruce’s security guards crisscrossing the lawn. He was glad to see the increased security. In this crazy world, it didn’t hurt to have too much protection.
Certainly not from a slave’s point of view.
He started to turn away when a pinprick of light caught his attention through the trees. He wondered if someone was using a set of high-tech binoculars. The light disappeared and he shrugged. Probably just sunlight reflecting off something shiny. He went downstairs.
& & & & & &
Lex was enjoying the conversation in the library. He and Bruce had not been able to talk alone yet. Maybe they never would. Bruce was very good at avoiding subjects he had no wish to discuss.
Lex would follow Bruce’s lead. His old friend knew what he had guessed. Whether Lex had guessed correctly about Clark, only Bruce could tell him.
Dick came in with more refreshments. Lex remembered the boy’s secret and suppressed a shudder. Dick was living under a shadow, or perhaps more apt, a Sword of Damocles.
Dick offered him some of Alfred’s incomparable pastries and Lex took one. “Thank you, Dick.”
The boy beamed and Lex wondered at the darkness in people’s hearts to want such light extinguished.
He shivered again, and took a sip of hot mint tea.
