From what I've read, RDJ is confirmed for Avengers 2 and has been for awhile. IM4 is in negotiations and he said he's interested if they give him a good script so it's possible.

I don't think the lack of an arc reactor will be a problem since Rhodey has a suit and there's already rumors that Tony may have injected himself with amazing tech that will allow him to have armor.

I kind of have this pet theory that they wrote the end just in case RDJ wouldn't sign for more movies and now they'll scramble with how to do IM4 and Tony will start inventing again or he'll have the bleeding edge armor or something so that he can go snark with the rest of the Avengers. XD
