Uh-oh. But I'm feel a little lost here. Should I know what a "roma" is from the story, or is that part of Dick's heritage in the comics?

Both, in a way. :)

I wrote about the Hunt Decree against the Roma in an earlier chapter, and that gave a hint to comics readers because Dick's heritage is Roma. He speaks Romany, too.
