Smallville Bashers Give Me A Headache

I should probably wait and write this after the show is over, but I just read a comment about Smallville which irritated me. A person replying to a mention of the show's end this Friday expressed sympathy for the commenter suffering with the show for ten years, and the commenter assured her/him that she hadn't watched every episode and would have serious concerns about someone who did!
Well, I was that someone. I've seen every episode (and plan to catch up on those that I'm missing lately due to technical difficulties). I understand people being driven crazy by SV, because I frequently have been, but if you consider the show an AU/Elseworlds, you'll be much happier. :)
The show screwed up royally often, but gave me genuine entertainment for ten years. I stayed out of the 'shipping wars and like a bunch of 'ships from the show. The show had a vibrant fandom during the Clex years, and continues to thrive.
Smallville could have been great, but let's face it, the original producers were too busy falling in love with Kristin Kreuk to concentrate on Clark's story, but the show managed to give us joy even while we ground our teeth. :)
I criticize Smallville when I feel it deserves it, but most of the time I was absorbed for the whole hour every week, and don't consider it a trial to have watched it! Being a fan doesn't mean you don't criticize, but I sometimes wonder when people constantly bash something, why are they watching it?
I am proud to be a Smallville fan. Frankly, I think it's just considered chic to bash the show. I know I'm going to miss it when it's no longer airing new episodes. In terms of storytelling, it should have ended about three years ago (IMO it dragged out Clark's journey to Superman a little too long), but I'm still going to miss it. And think of how lucky we SV fans are having ten years of canon to play with! Compare that to shows with far less years or fans of movies that give you only two hours of canon!
So, I'm happy to have 'suffered' through the ten years, and will be writing more SV in the years ahead! :)

Date: 2011-05-10 12:16 am (UTC)Seriously, like you said, we've all criticized the show, but that's only because we care so much. That person sounds just awful. Feel worried about people who watch every episode? Ugh, yeah, then they can worry about millions of people across the world because that's how many are still tuned in after 10 years. Smallville has a very loyal fanbase.

Plus, no matter how much drama it has, there's such a wide variety of tastes! No matter what you ship, I'm sure you can find another fan who ships the same thing and more likely than not some fanworks of said ship!
Being a fan doesn't mean you don't criticize, but I sometimes wonder when people constantly bash something, why are they watching it?
I've felt that way about particular fanbases too. Some people seem like they watch just so they can complain.

It had to have SOMEBODY watching to have lasted ten years! The CW doesn't strike me as a charity network that just leaves things on with sagging ratings.
I suppose some people might say that I'm a Pollyanna, but then they haven't read my reviews of the show. ;) I have criticized it plenty of times, but have praised it when it deserves it, too. I like to see both sides of things.

Exactly! There's so many 'ships and tastes within this fandom. It's a shame that there were 'shipping wars in the past, but I stay out of those and happily connect with fans like you! :)

Bingo! They like to bash and only watch for that. I've got too much going on to waste time like that. *rolls eyes*

Date: 2011-05-10 12:18 am (UTC)This! So much this! I've seen at least 3 posts in the past week with people making snide comments about SV ending and how they're SOOOOO much better than people that still watch since they stopped watching back in season whatever.
I've really wanted to tell them to F-off but that wouldn't be good for anything.

Oh, I know! It's so irritating! I can understand people dropping off from the first seasons if they're Clex fans, but you needn't be superior about it! I miss Clex, too, and my favorite seasons are the early seasons, but I'm enjoying the later ones as well. I've never quite understood why people have to be one or the other and can't enjoy both.

Nope, just get you into a rhubarb! Organic, from the Kent farm. ;)

Date: 2011-05-10 12:55 am (UTC)I just want to wave my arms around and yell "If you dislike it so much why are you investing so much time and energy into it?!" I didn't like 'Chuck' this season so I stopped watching it and stopped talking/writing about it. Easy! Simple!

Date: 2011-05-10 01:20 am (UTC)Oh, yeah, I'm always amused by that. "I hate this show but I never miss an episode!"

Ah, but there's your answer. It's easy! Too easy for some people. *rolls eyes*

I really dislike haters and negative people who comment on others because of what they like. Narrow minded much? they need to be beaten ;-D
LOL! I guess it's a sign of the times or something, that people prefer the negative to the positive. Their loss!

Clark was definitely a teenager in this! A pretty mature teen, but he still made mistakes and screwed up, but to me, I can identify with him more than, say, Bruce, because I can't wrap my head around being a billionaire and having so much rage and grief. Clark comes from a working-class family and had a happy childhood, pretty much, and I can identify with that. :)

True! And one of the things that hurt the most is his best friend turning into his enemy. :(

Date: 2011-05-10 03:39 pm (UTC)It's been crazy and fun and eye-rolling and awe-inspiring! Not every episode on ten years will be a winner (and some would say Smallville had more than its share of clunkers) but it kept me watching! :)

Date: 2011-05-10 04:16 am (UTC)I've seen tons of bashing. I don't get it. If you don't like something anymore, just stop watching it. If you want to remain in the fandom, say writing fic set during earlier seasons, then don't bash and mock the show and the people still enjoying it.
Sometimes I think some people just aren't happy if they're not trying to make everyone else unhappy. :P

Date: 2011-05-10 03:42 pm (UTC)Yeah, it was tough when the Luthors bit the dust. :)
I was surprised that the show, for me, got stronger in the last couple of seasons without Lex. I've never been a big Superman fan but I love me a great villain (which is why Lionel is my favorite character).
I think that without Lex, the show concentrated more on other elements of the Superman mythos, and it was fun seeing what would pop up every week. :)
And Lionel is one of the great villains of all time! :)

There you go! I think a lot of it has to do with people's favorite 'ships, but you'd think with all the possibilities in Smallville you could just be happy with your own and leave others to theirs.

The story of humankind! :)

Date: 2011-05-10 03:49 pm (UTC)I can agree with you on the bad writing and acting. :) Though it was hit-or-miss, pretty much. Sometimes just awful, other times pretty darned good.
A vast majority of fandom seem to think that because they like something that it must be good and because they hate something that it must be bad.
Exactly! It's the ol' rose-colored glasses thing.
As you say, you can enjoy something regardless (or even because) of its flaws. In fact, I think acknowledging the flaws of something you like means you like it even more.
Yes! When I write my reviews, I pull no punches. I like being a critical fan, but when the criticism is more than my enjoyment, it's time to leave. I never felt that way with Smallville. :)
People will consider the show a masterpiece compared to the Wonder Woman show that NBC is foisting on us. I just read another version of the pilot script and it's worse than anything Smallville ever filmed!

Date: 2011-05-10 04:24 pm (UTC)I've had a love-hate relationship with Smallville over the years, but it's doing something right if it's got me glued to the TV week after week, and if it evokes a strong enough response that I sometimes yell at the TV. lol.
I'm going to write my own post reflecting on my own history with Smallville. Ahh memories. It's crazy to think it's done after Friday! *sob*

Date: 2011-05-10 04:49 pm (UTC)Definitely! Smallville deserves criticism, and we've all done it, but we recognize the good things, too.

That's me, too! I watch every hour never glancing at my watch (okay, some episodes drag, but the majority don't) and yell at the TV or gasp in shock or delight. ;)

Date: 2011-05-10 10:27 pm (UTC)Personally, I enjoyed the show and this is coming from someone who never particularly liked Clark Kent/Superman. I will admit that lately it is boring me a bit, I agree that they should've ended a few years ago, but I've also haven't missed an episode except maybe one or two (the last bunch since the break are waiting for me on my DVR).

I think that's natural, to find boring stretches because of the longevity of the series. I've felt that way at times, and then they go and do something to get me all fired up again! :)
