This was Dick’s favorite time of day.
Dawn was just reaching rosy fingers across the sky, lemon-yellow and tangerine-orange streaking across starlit blue. Birds sang to greet the new day, their songs of happiness never failing to lift his spirits after a long night of patrol.
He closed his eyes, listening to the chirping and warbling, grinning as he recognized a robin’s song. He wrapped his arms tighter around the warm body next to him in their shared bed.
Nights in Gotham were rarely peaceful, though night held its own beauty. Dick had loved patrol and his city, but especially loved fighting by Bruce’s side. Subsuming his brightness into the shadows was a challenge he relished, just as he gloried in keeping Bruce from sinking too deeply into the dark.
The best times were the return to the Manor after a wild and chaotic night, or even a quiet one, to consume Alfred’s chocolate chip cookies and help Bruce relax.
Now he heard the sound of Roy’s breathing in the steadiness of sleep, the quiet of their house, and the sound of small feet padding into the living room as Lian turned on the TV with the volume very low to start watching Saturday morning cartoons.
Dick heard her go to the kitchen, open a cabinet, and shake out Batman and Robin cereal into her yellow plastic bowl. Or maybe it was Superman or Black Canary or Red Arrow cereal. The JLA had a licensing deal for charity.
The refrigerator door opened and Dick could hear the sound of milk pouring over cereal: snap, crackle, and pop. Ah, Green Arrow cereal.
Roy shifted closer in his sleep, Dick stroking soft strawberry hair. Last night they had tumbled into bed, made mad, passionate love, and had fallen into sated yet exhausted sleep.
Dick was always an early riser. Even though circus folk often slept late because of night performances, he had always loved the coming of the day.
Dick smiled as he opened his eyes and looked at his sleeping lover.
Red hair like a passionate sunset…or sunrise.
Little feet padded back into the living room and his smile grew even brighter.
All was peaceful in his little family.

Heh, and I forgot to mention Nightwing cereal (in a separate deal) because I'm sure Lian would want her Uncle Dick's cereal, too! :)
Thank you, Angel! :)

Early morning is one of my favorite times of day, and I had a feeling that it would be Dick's, too. :) After all, he's a child of the sun. ;)

I patterned the story after the thoughts that drift in the early morning hours when you first wake up. :)
