BLUE, SILVER, GOLD
Diana brought in the files that Steve had requested. He was on the phone, blue eyes widening.
“What? Are you sure?” Excitement laced his voice. “I can be in California tomorrow.” He bit his lip. “Are you sure that Hal’s all right?” Relief swept over him. “Thank you. I’ll be there.”
He hung up the phone. “Diana! I’m going to California!”
“New assignment?”
He nodded, shining like the sun.
“I’m going to test the XJ-266!”
“That’s wonderful, Steve!”
“Hal Jordan had to bow out. He’s not sick, thank goodness, just that another mission came up.”
“He’ll be happy that you’re his replacement.”
Steve grinned. “I’ll take good care of his lady.” Eyes sparkling, he added, “I’ll have to let Wonder Woman know.”
Diana smiled as she left the office.

The day was perfect for flying. Steve scrambled into the cockpit, buckled in, and performed pre-flight checks.
Then he was up, up, and away!
Excitement filled him as the powerful engine pushed him through the sky. Power thrummed all around him, his to command by mere touch.
He smiled as he thought of his Angel: power that he didn’t command, but was his to enjoy.
He kept his eye on the instruments, mentally running down the checklists of tests he had to perform.
He used a deft touch, putting the silver craft through maneuvers. He felt one with his jet, smiling at the Zen-like way he was merging with his machine.
He loved every second of this flight, his skills needing to meet the demands of the jet, the power crackling from the machine directly into his body.
Blue skies.
Silver power.
Golden freedom.

Diana watched from a vantage point overlooking the testing grounds. She stood on a cliff in the shadows of the trees, her invisible plane only a few seconds away by command.
She had spoken to Hal just before he left on a Green Lantern mission. He had happily recommended Steve as his replacement, Diana more than ready to step in if necessary.
The U.S. Government owed her.
She would stay out of sight, trusting in her Beloved’s abilities.
He needed this.
And she was more than happy to give it to him.

I'm sorry the other pilots don't get to see the error of their ways a little more, but it's good to know Steve got something he wanted and can enjoy it thanks to Diana. :)
And jerks like the other pilots will never understand!

I thought of you when writing this. ;)

I want to explore more external conflicts for these two this year, though I won't stop writing romantic fluff!
