SPARKLING HEART

Vale sighed. These primitives! It was trying to say the least.

His assignment to foment war here on Korla had been going well, and the war was in its early stages. It would allow his people, the Varians, to mine for korzite without the nuisance of having to dispose of inquisitive Korlons, and even better, serve as a testing ground for their new wave of low-tech weapons.

The contingent of Earth’s heroes that had arrived (how the hell many heroes did that backwater planet have, anyway?) had been neutralized. They could have been either disposed of or sent on their way with some clever stratagems, but now the Kash had come to him and said that their religion demanded a sacrifice from among the prisoners. The senior official, Katine, could ‘see’ which one to choose. Vale had not asked for details.

Vale pushed back a lock of silky white hair. His light-blue skin and hair color had matched well with the Korlons, and dampened their xenophobia. They had been immediately suspicious of the different skin colors of the captured heroes, however.

Well, let them have their barbaric sacrifice. It was all mumbo-jumbo to him. He could never understand the religion-soaked, but then, his people had loosened themselves from the bindings of superstition generations ago. Their religion now was power and treasure.

Vale smiled.

& & & & & &

Dick felt his blood freeze. Hal stepped forward slightly and Bruce hissed. Dick could see Roy tense from the corner of his eye.

“We’re not going to hand over one of us to be killed.”

Hal’s voice was cold, the fingers of his right hand flexing, aching for his ring.

“The only way you will be permitted to leave is by allowing us to make this sacrifice.”

“And if we refuse?”

“We will kill you all.”

The Korlon gestured to his companion and the other man drew out a large green gem from his robe and held it out. A thin ray of emerald light lanced out and struck Roy in the shoulder, ripping a surprised cry of pain from him.

Dick immediately turned and started toward his friend.

“The next strike is at his heart.”

Dick looked at Roy, who was clutching his shoulder.

“Dick…”

Roy saw it in Dick’s eyes: for a moment, panic flared in his own, too.

Dick shook his head slightly, entreating Roy, and squared his shoulders.

“I’ll go.”

“Dick…”

Bruce’s voice was hoarse. Dick turned and smiled slightly, love and pain in his eyes. He gently rested a hand on Bruce’s knee, then turned away to face the Korlons.

The taller alien gestured to a guard, who unlocked the cell. Hal moved quickly, Dinah and Ollie joining him, and the green light burst forth in a fan of color. Dinah screamed as she fell, Ollie catching her. Hal froze and Dick whirled.

“Don’t!” He was also speaking to Roy, whose face was a picture of miserable frustration.

Dick turned back and the guards grabbed him, dragging him out. The cell door clanged shut behind them.

“Wait!” Hal called as Dick disappeared through the gates with his captors. The officials turned, and Hal asked, “Why Dick?”

“We always choose the one with the sparkling heart.”

The Korlons turned and walked away.

Bruce’s face was an agonized mask.

Good chapter! I've recently started writing Teen Titans stories, but erm... they're not exactly action-esque. If you've got some time, would you please leave a review?

The first part was particularly interesting. Can't wait for the third installment. Spectacular job as always.

NNnnoooooooooo, Can't have him you stuuupid aliens
Even though this makes the most sense from an anthropological point of view. One always sacrifices what one sees as the best or the brightest, or it is not a sacrifice???
Waiting with baited breath for the next part

Well, let them have their barbaric sacrifice.
Oh no! Please don't!

“Dick…”
Bruce’s voice was hoarse. Dick turned and smiled slightly, love and pain in his eyes. He gently rested a hand on Bruce’s knee, then turned away to face the Korlons.

Poor Dick and Bruce. *Hugs them both*

“We always choose the one with the sparkling heart.”
Well, I'm not surprised they noticed Dick's sparkling heart. He is so special. *Sigh*

The second part of this chapter was so intense and touching. Excellently written!

Can't wait for the next chapter.
Thanks for sharing. :)

*threatens the aliens*

Hands off the one with the sparkling heart, you can't have him you brutes! None dares to separate the bat and his life-mate.

*Off to the next part*

Oh, Dick! *wibble* Seems just about right, that the captors always choose the brightest of the group to be sacrificed. :( I certainly don't blame the others for trying to stop them, either. Damn.
