CURIOSITY
Lex studied the figures on his computer screen. The Committee knew they were in trouble. The deaths of the Kryptonian test subjects were growing in numbers. The drug used to suppress memories was not the problem, at least not on its own. Suppression of their powers made them not just vulnerable to Drug MS-18, but their bodies were fighting on two fronts: fighting the memory suppressant, and the suppression of powers under a yellow sun.
From the autopsy reports, the battle had weakened the Kryptonians’ hearts, even causing damage the longer the drugs and Blue Kryptonite was used.
The properties of Blue K suppressed superpowers, though there was another form of Kryptonite the scientists were working on for the same purpose. Supposedly it caused less strain on the heart and other internal organs. Labeled K-X, it was rare, only a small amount on Earth, and the Committee’s scientists had it.
Lex frowned. There was a notation in the report: the K-X was a smaller amount than it should have been because some had been stolen four years ago.
His fingers flew furiously over the keys, trying to find more information about the robbery. Of course it had been kept hush-hush. Not even that newshound Lois Lane could have sniffed this story out.
He read a confidential report that had been presented to the Committee a year ago, before he had been cleared to join.
Gray-blue eyes widened and he sat back in his chair. Dr. Jarissa Kane had presented the report, and she had a speculation.
Lex rubbed his eyes, thinking over her speculations. She had been reading about the upsurge in slave-smuggling and wondered if Kryptonians were being sold with suppressed powers.
Lex sighed. There were so many questions…
“Master?”
Lex opened his eyes to see Jamie standing by his desk.
“Are you all right? Do you have an headache?”
“I’m developing one.” Lex smiled faintly.
“I’ll get you some aspirin.”
Lex watched Jamie go, still wearing that little smile.
& & & & & &
Jamie quickly returned with the aspirin and a glass of water. He hated to see Lex sick. His Master was such a strong man, but even he could feel under-the-weather.
“Thanks.” Lex swallowed the aspirin and drank the glass of water. “You take good care of me, Blondie.”
Jamie smiled. “My pleasure, Master.” He settled at Lex’s feet, green eyes on Lex. “Can you tell me what’s distressing you?”
“I can, but it’s confidential.”
Jamie nodded. He knew the drill.
Lex explained what he had read, Jamie putting his chin in his hands. He looked thoughtful, absorbing everything Lex had told him.
“Then are they using the memory suppressants in addition to the K-X?”
“There are other drugs for that.”
“Why would these smugglers go to all this trouble? They can’t extol the virtues of suppressed powers like a drug dealer keeping a leopard on a leash. If they know their slave is Kryptonian, they can’t tell anybody, not with the Hunt Decree.”
“Maybe it’s like buying stolen art. No one else can see it, but you can.”
“Hmm.” Jamie frowned. “How many Kryptonians would they smuggle? Any missing from the project?”
“No.” Lex suddenly got an idea. “Though maybe…” He did a search on the computer. “Yes, see? There have been groups of Kryptonians swept up by the Hunters, and some have been executed while others have been brought to us. But a few groups have numbers unaccounted for.”
“Did the missing Kryptonians die and just went unaccounted for?” Jamie frowned.
“I would say that some could have slipped through the cracks, but it’s doubtful.”
“It just seems like a lot of work for little pay-off, unless there’s truth in some rich freemen eager to own forbidden slaves with only themselves knowing it.”
“Maybe the exotic market fits.”
“How so?” Jamie hugged his bent knees.
“If the Kryptonians were beautiful, some might have been taken for the exotic trade, but of course their true identities had to be suppressed.” Lex checked his database again. “Four years ago, there was a raid in the Outer Rim by rogue Kryptonians on Outpost Meridian III. There were Kryptonians scheduled for execution there, thirty-six to be exact. The outpost was attacked by a super-powered Kryptonian who was brought down by Green Kryptonite.” Lex pursed his lips. “Seems this attacker was called Kal-El by the prisoners.”
“The Savior of Krypton?”
Lex nodded. “Though they could have just been wishfully thinking.”
“What happened to them?”
“They were executed.”
“Kal-El, too?”
Lex read further. “It doesn’t say, but I assume so. He wasn’t given to the Committee for experimentation.”
Jamie was saddened at the waste of so many lives, but it was a harsh universe. He brushed his fingers over his manacles.
Lex tapped on the keys, intent on learning more. Jamie smiled. When Lex’s curiosity was afire, he was more gorgeous than ever.
Jamie had built up plenty of observations of one Lex Luthor for the past few years, and considered himself as close an expert as there ever could be on his Master.
Because, of course, there were always hidden facets to Lex. Jamie did not need a psychology degree to figure out why.
Lex’s mother Lillian had died when he was eight, leaving him with only Lionel as his remaining parent. With the death of Baby Julian a few years before Lillian, Lex had essentially been an only child with no buffer against his father. He had lost his hair in a freak accident at LuthorCorp Labs, and his baldness had made him a target for bullies at Excelsior, the exclusive boys’ school he had attended, shipped off by Lionel.
Lex had initially clashed with Oliver Queen there, but the boys had eventually worked things out, and had become friends with another student, Bruce Wayne.
Lionel had been a nightmare father, manipulative and abusive, at least in the psychological sense. Lionel wanted to ‘toughen up’ his sole remaining heir, and Jamie had heard plenty of stories from the Household staff.
Lionel had not even left Lex’s bedslaves alone. Jamie knew he was very lucky that Lex had made a stand against his father over him. Even now Lionel looked at him with open lust and patted and pinched his ass. Jamie was careful never to find himself in a room alone with Lionel if he could help it.
The sex with Lex was incredible. He was intense, exciting, and considerate. Granted, Jamie did not have a lot of comparison as Lex had been the only one he had ever slept with, but he talked to other pleasure slaves.
He had even talked to Clark. Bruce sounded like a wonderful lover, but Jamie was completely satisfied with Lex.
Lex’s complexities fascinated him. He could be kind and considerate but watch out if he got into cold and imperious mode! Jamie was always careful not to do anything to get that death ray glare directed at him.
Not that Lex was cruel to him. In fact, he was exceptionally courteous and kind, not just out of politeness but because he cared about Jamie.
Jamie loved being Lex’s confidante. That quick, agile mind was brilliant and incisive. Always curious like any good scientist, Lex wanted to know what made things tick.
Jamie smiled. He had the privilege of knowing what made Lex Luthor tick.
“Hey!”
Jamie looked up, startled. “I’m sorry, Master. Did I miss something?”
Lex shook his head fondly. “I said I wanted you to compile all the stories that Lois Lane has written about the slave-smuggling rings.”
“Yes, Master.”
Lex stroked Jamie’s shining blond hair. “We’re going to see if there’s a pattern with all these events.”
Jamie nodded. Lex sensed a mystery here, and Jamie felt the same.
If anyone could get answers, it was Lex Luthor.

Date: 2011-05-13 06:45 am (UTC)I have the feeling that things are getting ready to happen -- like there will be a lot of action coming up, a lot of change.
Also, I cannot believe how *much* there is to this series! When I started reading, I think you were still on the first arc (maybe the second). You've come a long way, baby! So, congratulations on that. ^-^

Thank you, hon! :)
I do consider it a major accomplishment. It takes a lot to stick with something this long (my thanks to the readers!) and still have the enthusiasm to write it. It's just a story that needed to be told! :)
