Dick stretched out on the snow covering the Wayne Manor grounds, gazing up at the pearl-gray sky. He could feel more snow on the way.

Up above trees that were puffy with snow, a brilliantly-hued cardinal perched against that pristine white. Dick breathed in the cold, crisp air, his lungs feeling cleansed. A faint tang of salt air tickled his nostrils as he listened to the silence of the woods.

He gently swished his arms and legs as he made a snow angel, feeling the cold through his clothes. The cardinal hopped around on the branch, little snowflakes drifting down as a gentle whoosh of cold air swayed the branch.

Dick smiled. The silence was the good kind, different from the silence in Gotham after midnight. There the silence always seemed fraught with trepidation, as if waiting for something to happen. Here was as clean and pure as you get. Here, acres of woods beside the sea promoted peace and awareness of the goodness in life.

Dick closed his eyes and listened to the silence. The sea was calm but would be churning again soon if a storm arrived. A distant bird call could barely be heard. He could smell sweet woodsmoke curling up and out from a chimney, probably from the Manor.

Dick lost track of time, drifting in and out of sleep. He felt snowflakes touch his face and opened his eyes. Snow was falling fairly fast, creating tiny stars in Dick’s dark hair. He would be a snowman soon at this rate. He stuck out his tongue and tasted clean coldness.

Footsteps crunched on the snow. He smiled again. The footsteps would not have been heard if the one making them had wanted to remain ninja-silent. He waited as the footsteps drew closer.

A shadow fell over him. The tall figure looming over him was dressed in an expensive black coat, a black-and-red scarf wound around his neck. His gloved hands were in his coat pockets.

Bruce looked every inch the Lord of the Manor. He was elegant and gentlemanly. Dick devoured every inch of him with his eyes, pleased that Bruce was wearing Dick’s Christmas gift. He had been careful to pick a ‘respectable’ scarf, nothing gaudy. Bruce appreciated his restraint.

“I’m cold,” Dick complained.

“Lying in the snow on a very cold day will do that,” Bruce said dryly.

“Warm me up.” Dick stretched out his arms.

Bruce took his hands and Dick gracefully stood up, showers of tiny snowflakes drifting down from his body. Bruce’s expression was one of avid admiration. He held Dick’s hands tightly.

Dick envisioned a roaring fire in the fireplace, Alfred’s chocolate chip cookies on the coffee table, and he and Bruce sitting close together on the couch while the snow fell outside the windows.

Bruce and Dick walked toward the Manor as Bruce draped his arm around the younger man’s shoulders, the only sound that of their boots shushing on the snow.
