Review (Iron Man 3)

So I finally got to see Iron Man 3!
I’m glad I had my earplugs. Definitely a loud movie! Lots of explosions and mayhem, a little too much for my taste. It’s like reading a hurt/comfort fanfic with a lotta hurt but little comfort.
I did enjoy seeing Tony, Pepper, Happy and Rhodey again. The interactions were smart and crisp and they used the Mandarin from the comics (though changed him), Extremis from the comics (changed the storyline), and sentient armor from the comics (with modifications). So at least they’re trying to stay true to the source material.
The movie was entertaining. The kid, Harley, was a lot better than the usual smart-mouthed Hollywood brats you see on-screen. He and Tony had a good rapport.
Um, Tony, the next time you want to challenge a villain, maybe you shouldn’t give him your home address?
Ben Kingsley had fun with his character once his true nature was revealed.
Aldritch Killian certainly is a comic book villain: crazy and with powers that cause a ton of trouble.
I loved the giant bunny! That gift is so Tony, extravagant but cute! ;)
The Christmastime theme was kinda cool for a spring release. ;)
Some good comic moments between Tony and Happy. :)
Omigosh, I loved Tony in Happy’s hospital room. Tony can drive you crazy as a friend but it’s extremely loyal. And I loved the scenes with him and Rhodey together, fighting the bad guys or not.
Pepper wearing the armor was boss. That’s from the comics, too. And her kicking ass at the end because of Extremis? Oh, yeah!
Though I’ll admit to being shocked when I first saw Gwyneth. She’s still beautiful but looks painfully thin. I know that actresses have to stay very thin because of the camera putting on the pounds, but that white dress she wore looked as if it was trying to suggest non-existent curves. Maybe she was thin in the first two movies and I just never noticed.
I liked this movie. Iron Man 1 is still my favorite but this one is fine. That spectacular sequence with all the suits showing up in the latter scenes was really cool, and the fireworks display was lovely. Pity the suits had to go!
And now the questions: with the suits gone and Tony free of the arc reactor, will we see him in more than a cameo role (or at all) in Avengers 2? I don’t mind changing the roster (I’d love to see Jan and Hank) but will Marvel Studios be okay with a surefire moneymaker like Iron Man quietly retired? Should be interesting to see!
I would recommend this movie to Marvel and Iron Man fans and to those who are not. ;)

Date: 2013-05-22 05:35 pm (UTC)It'll be interesting to see how the studio moves forward if RDJ decides he's played the role enough. Not a problem for any future Avengers movies as the team has always had a lot of turnover on the roster.
Pretty fun movie! :)

Date: 2013-05-22 08:22 pm (UTC)If RDJ is not signed already, I think they're deep in to negotiations for Avengers 2. I expect to see Iron Man in Avengers 2, but I'm not sure about anything else. There have been the obvious talk of Iron Man 4, but also talk of RDJ wanting to move on.
I think with time off for RDJ, a good script, and the right money we'll eventually see Iron Man 4.

Date: 2013-05-22 10:10 pm (UTC)I expect money will talk. ;) The studio will push hard for RDJ to return because his movies are such moneymakers. If the script is good, he'll probably consider it. And I do expect to see him in The Avengers 2, even if only in a limited role.

Date: 2013-05-23 12:21 am (UTC)Needless to say, I loved seeing Pepper kick ass toward the end. And this is coming from me not being a fan of the way GP portrayed Pepper in the first movie.
I actually loved the whole movie to bits and pieces. It was a lot of fun, but they actually had a decent amount of character focus and even a bit of realism in terms of dealing with Tony's PTSD after his near-death experience in the Avengers.
To be honest, the Christmas timing of the movie confused the hell out of me since it was a spring release. It took me out of the story to the point where I was asking myself why they chose to set the movie at Christmas time and I got distracted by wondering if they were originally shooting for a November release and pushed it back. Which is silly and probably my own issue more than anything else.

Yes! Though I thought they might flash back more to Afghanistan, but I guess they decided one problem at at time. :)

It was a a little weird, like Christmas-in-July, but it was kinda cool, too. Quirky is Marvel and Iron Man, so it fit. ;)

Date: 2013-05-23 10:09 am (UTC)Yep, wasn't slow at all! And the Christmas stuff was fun but a little odd in a spring movie, but whatevs. :)
I agree with you about Gwyneth, both in the way she seemed so paper-thin and the coolness of the armor. Although, I guess - I just now thought of this - maybe part of the take-away is the contrast between her frailness and post-extremis armored version?
That's something I hadn't thought of! Good theory. :)
I don't know but I think my favorite thing was the way the suit was the extra character.. And the way the scruffiest version of the suit --well, you know.
LOL! Yes, I know. ;)

Date: 2013-05-23 05:55 am (UTC)I don't think the lack of an arc reactor will be a problem since Rhodey has a suit and there's already rumors that Tony may have injected himself with amazing tech that will allow him to have armor.
I kind of have this pet theory that they wrote the end just in case RDJ wouldn't sign for more movies and now they'll scramble with how to do IM4 and Tony will start inventing again or he'll have the bleeding edge armor or something so that he can go snark with the rest of the Avengers. XD

I just figured that the arc reactor was sort of symbolic and fixing it meant that he might move on from the superhero game. :)

Agreed! They were a lot of fun, and I liked all the relationships and how they were portrayed.

Agreed. Kids are very hit or miss in movies, because sometimes they try to see them be too smart/funny/cute and it just gets annoying but Harley worked in this film and I enjoyed his interactions with Tony. NGL, I kept secretly wondering if Tony had fathered a kid without knowing. Maybe that's a fanfic in the making, lol.
I'm really excited for the Avengers sequel. I have no doubts that Tony will play an equal part of the film, because like you said, there is no way they'll let a moneymaker like that be a background character.

Yeah, unfortunately that was kind of glossed over.

I'm glad they all got important stuff to do. :)

Heh, very well might be a fanfic in that! But a snarky kid like Harley is okay since he can hold his own with Tony. :)

I'm not sure when that movie is supposed to be released. Probably not for a couple of years yet.

This!! Omg, yes, lol! Maybe it's because I'm from the Batman school of thought where you keep your identity secret and your secret lair SECRET! Lol! My first thought was, water you doing Tony!? The second was, I wonder if I can drive up there, hee! ;)
Pepper wearing the armor was boss.
YES!! Forever YES!! It was awesome!!!!!!!!!!

The ending seemed a little rushed but unless the movie was going to stretch out another hour, they had to go fast.

Bruce would roll his eyes and say, "Tony being Tony." I definitely got the impression that he let his emotions run away from him after being in Happy's hospital room and didn't think of the consequences of what would happen to his and Pepper's home! Even though the Mandarin could easily find his address, that challenge was kind of stupid. But then, that's Tony! ;)

I loved it! Maybe a little Natasha/Pepper fic with a bit of armor might be in my future. ;)
