Week 5: New Orleans Saints 34. New England Patriots 0 (1-4) (Sunday, October 8, 2023)

STINK, STANK, STUNK!!!!!!!

After last week's worst loss in Bill Belichick's career as a Head Coach, we witnessed his second worse loss, this time at home! It was awful in all three phases of the game. QB Mac Jones threw yet another Pick-6, the defense couldn't stop anybody and special teams were atrocious. Awful, awful, and MORE awful! Crickets at Gillette.

Where do they go from here? Who knows? They have no playmakers, injuries have piled up, and coaching looks clueless. Bill keeps building a team like Brady's still here, Tom's greatness spackling the cracks in the foundation and elevating JAGs to serviceable-to-good. Can the 71-year-old Belichick relate to today's players who can't be yelled at? Who are social media darlings? Can a chalkboard coach relate to tablet players?

Can this be fixed at all?

The Dolphins and Jets won, the Pats and Bills lost. Next week they travel to Las Vegas to meet the Raiders. Primetime games coming up. Bet the networks bump 'em.

AFC EAST

Miami 4-1

BUFF 3-2

NYJ 2-3

NE 1-4

After an ugly loss, the Patriots of old would be expected to come out fighting, not look worse, especially against an average team like the Saints. The Saints have some talent but not 34-0 shut out talent!

This right here is the problem. I don't see it as a generation gap and/or the youth not being able to handle it, because not only Pete Caroll (and Saban on the college side) the same age as BB, but even when Belichick was with the Browns in the 90s, a lot of players hated him and his harsh style of coaching. Success and someone like Brady being around to welcome the harsh coaching makes a difference.

Unfortunately, as you said, he's doing what he used to do - building a strong defense (which is a little injury riddled to be fair) and making some poor offensive choices and Brady can't cover it up. Mac also needs to step up a bit. He is starting to remind me of Jimmy G - they both have upside but neither have really improved during their time in the league. At last Mac is younger but the jury's still out on his long term future.

Belichick likes to be one year ahead than late with players and unfortunately, that included Brady. I think he thought with the way the offense wasn't the greatest in 2019, it was time but he was obviously wrong about Brady. I bet he assumed he would suffer for a year or so and find another QB and get back to the top but it's not working out. I remember people used to point out that BB went 11-5 with Cassel as a way to diminish Brady's legacy but that was a 16-0 team that basically still had all the pieces!

I like Jimmy and he did a lot of good things for the 49ers (they were at a really sad state when he came in) but he is a risk to both turn the ball over (the year they went to the SB, I swear, they were like 5-6 straight up dropped INTs by the other team's defense) and get hurt too, because he just stands like a statue in the pocket and that never changed, which was clear from that Raiders-Packers game on MNF. The lack of pocket movement is what reminded me of Mac.

No, it can't be fun. I thought bringing in Bill O Brien would help the offense but they somehow look worse.

Never doubt Tom Brady! You think BB would know best lol He could play today if he wanted to! Even in Tampa, they could've gone back to back and might've if BB had been with Brady rather than Arians, who made some really dumb decisions. Even the year that they won, it was clear Brady took over the offense to some extent because it started to resemble NE's and then they had success after a slow start.

Agreed. My sister and I were saying the other day how the outcome wouldn't have been much different if you had. I know Brisett didn't kill it anywhere but I used to think that he had a better chance to follow Brady than Jimmy did. The Niners started the season 0-9 the year that they traded for Jimmy and he infused some life into that team and the fans by winning some games after they put him in. I do believe that if they had gotten Brady after he left NE, the Niners would've won 1-2 SBs with all their talent. It is already clear that Shanahan trusts Purdy more.
