In Memoriam
Nov. 25th, 2020 08:50 amI was shocked and saddened to find out that a dear friend of mine passed away recently. We had kept in touch and I was looking forward to a reply to my latest letter (yes, we'd gone old school lately) and learned the news through a mutual friend of ours. I'd known

khylara for 30 years, so a big part of my life is gone. :(
She and I met through Hogan's Heroes fandom. She was looking for contributors to an HH zine she was doing and I sent her a story, and we started corresponding, and the rest is history! We met in person at MediaWest* Con in the early '90s because we both needed roommates, and we were a good match.
We made a lot of happy memories over the years. We decorated our door in the hotel every year, and ate most of our meals together and attended some panels together, though we also were flexible enough to go off and attend other panels without each other and get together with friends we knew through fandoms we didn't share, though we ended up sharing quite a few fandoms, which
khylara declared was all my fault! :) We also shared many mutual friends.
We enjoyed the full MWC experience: the panels, vid room, Dealers' Room, parties, the masquerade, the Art Show and Auction. She liked to stake out the auction and bid on stuff while I drifted in and out throughout the course of the auction, which in its heyday could go 3-4 hours.
We shared so much, endlessly talking fannish things and sometimes real life. Spending time with each other at the con was always a highlight of the year for both of us.
RIP,

Yep, today is the 50th anniversary of that groundbreaking pop culture phenomenon, Star Trek! It debuted on NBC this day 50 years ago and ran for three years, inspiring an animated series and three television spin-offs, six TOS movies, several ST:TNG movies, and the current Reboot. Even if a person hasn't watched a single second of any of the TV shows or movies, they're aware of who Kirk and Spock are, "Beam me up, Scotty!", and probably tribbles! :) It was the show with the first interracial kiss on TV (Kirk and Uhura in Plato's Stepchildren) and featured an integrated cast (though I Spy and Hogan's Heroes beat them out by a year, it was still a major thing in 1966). The show entered the cultural lexicon a long time ago and inspired people in real life to go into scientific careers and to join NASA. It helped create modern Fandom and kicked off the slash movement within that Fandom. You can thank K/S for the abundance of slash from all TV shows and movies today.
Enjoy the day, pet a tribble, play the Vulcan lyrette, and create your own adventure on the holodeck. Above all, live long and prosper, my friends! :)
