Happy Canada Day to all of our friends up North! :)

My paternal grandmother was born on Prince Edward Island, so I've got some Canadian in me! ;)

I've also been on a Canadian kick since the Due South Archive was transferred to AO3 and I've been going through 154 records to reformat where I can, add tags, and break up the stories into chapters. I've been rereading the old stories and poems (I wrote a LOT of DS poetry!) and remembering the friends I made in that fandom, many of whom I'm still in contact with today.

The show aired on American TV from 1994-1996 and was revived for a 1998-1999 run. The show was quirky with subtle humor in the first two seasons, poking fun at Canadian and American stereotypes, and it became a hot fandom with the Benton Fraser/Ray Vecchio slash pairing. The show's subtext sometimes was more text! Ray bringing Benny home to meet his mother in the Pilot? Ray the only one to call him 'Benny'? Meeting in a closet at the Chicago Precinct to discuss strategy? Riiiight! Saving each other's lives? Dief (short for Diefenbaker), a deaf wolf who had saved Benny in the Yukon, welcoming Ray into the pack right away? I could go on and on! :)

The revival went on without David Marciano (Ray Vecchio), who was no longer available, so Callum Keith Rennie played Ray Kowalski as the new partner. Paul Gross (Benton Fraser) was given complete control (never give an actor complete control!). He wrote the scripts, starred in the show, and produced. The show's humor went from subtle to broad, and the tone was completely different. Kind of reminded me of the old '70s British SF series, Space: 1999, with Seasons 1 and 2 drastically different. Anyway, there are a lot of Fraser/Kowalski fans out there, but there are still Benny/Ray V. fans carrying the torch. The episodes, including the Pilot, can be found on YouTube.

Due South was one of the first fandoms to successfully straddle zines and on-line archives. During the show's first run, dozens of zines were published, not only in the U.S. but also Canada, the U.K., Australia, and New Zealand. Hundreds of stories were being uploaded to Hexwood (the old name for the DS Archive), and the show stayed hot for several years. I wrote the first Benny/Ray V. slash story (as Jeannie Marie) that appeared in a zine, The Straight And Narrow (the story title, not the zine title). :) In addition to the 154 stories and poems that I uploaded to Hexwood, I wrote dozens more for zines. A great creative time! :)

I also went to the DS con, RCW 139, in Toronto in '97, '98, and '99. I was the DMOB (David Marciano Oestregen Brigade) liaison to David Marciano in '98, and let me tell you, I've never seen more gorgeous green eyes! :) I continued DMOB duties in '99, but David was not a guest that year. I did bring Ray Doll in '98 and David got a big kick out of the knitted doll. :)

In '98, the Toronto Daily Mail published a story on slash fiction with Benny and Ray V. excerpts. I can only imagine what David thought reading the paper with his morning eggs! ;) But he's a very cool guy. Very courteous to the fans and a good sport, too.

I've finished 140 records and have 14 more to go! Whoo hoo! :)

Happy Star Trek Day, my friends! :)

Yep, today is the 50th anniversary of that groundbreaking pop culture phenomenon, Star Trek! It debuted on NBC this day 50 years ago and ran for three years, inspiring an animated series and three television spin-offs, six TOS movies, several ST:TNG movies, and the current Reboot. Even if a person hasn't watched a single second of any of the TV shows or movies, they're aware of who Kirk and Spock are, "Beam me up, Scotty!", and probably tribbles! :) It was the show with the first interracial kiss on TV (Kirk and Uhura in Plato's Stepchildren) and featured an integrated cast (though I Spy and Hogan's Heroes beat them out by a year, it was still a major thing in 1966). The show entered the cultural lexicon a long time ago and inspired people in real life to go into scientific careers and to join NASA. It helped create modern Fandom and kicked off the slash movement within that Fandom. You can thank K/S for the abundance of slash from all TV shows and movies today.

Enjoy the day, pet a tribble, play the Vulcan lyrette, and create your own adventure on the holodeck. Above all, live long and prosper, my friends! :)

Okay, Batman v Superman: Dawn Of Justice is finally here! I plan on going next week on Bargain Day to see this foundation of the DCCU. I chose a profile icon to celebrate Clark and Bruce, even though they probably won't say a civil word to each other in the entire movie. I'll probably replace it with a Wonder Woman icon soon, as she is emerging as the best thing in this film. Wouldn't it be a kick if a Wondy movie actually saved DC's bacon after they took 76 years to present her on the big screen in a live-action flick?

I won't be reading any reviews until Tuesday, but go ahead and write them! I plan on checking back after I've written my own. Hopefully this movie will be better than we think. Huzzah for the World's Finest! :)

In honor of our boys, take a walk down Memory Lane or enjoy the fun for the first time with World's Finest #289. It's canon, folks! ;)

You know how I said I wasn't going to sign up for a Big Bang this year? Yeah, I did! *facepalms* It was killing me to see all these great Big Bangs announcing sign-up times and me with no time or ideas until I got one for the [livejournal.com profile] marvel_bang. I've been writing Steve/Tony for the past month, anyway, and managed to get 2,000 words already scribbled, so here I go! Just signed up! Oh, and there will be Natasha/Pepper, too! ;)

And I have two story ideas! *dances* So this second film has LOTS of good stuff! I would recommend it if you liked the first film and even if you didn’t! ;)

Halloween came to Smallville as it always did, with a last burst of color and a hint of snow in the air. The children of Smallville were excited as they went to school in costume and chattered about the candy they would get tonight. The adults put the finishing touches on their own costumes to accompany the children trick-or-treating and to attend Nell Potter’s party. )

What’s today? It’s Public Enemies Day! :)

The DVD (also on Blu-Ray) is being released today! And I’m sure Netflix will have it available, too.

I stand by the review (spoilers) I wrote a day after seeing the film, and my recommendations (spoiler-free) which I’ll quote here because they are part of the review entry:

If you’re a Christian Bale fan, you will love him in the clothes. Sorry, he never gets out of them. ;) He has a supporting role so isn’t in the film as often as Johnny Depp, but he was in it more than I expected. The lighting does him justice, and especially highlights his beautiful eyes in certain scenes. Hands are very yummily noticeable, too, not to mention other, um, assets. ;)

If you want to enjoy his beauty, go, but if you don’t like understated performances, perhaps this movie is not for you, Christian fan or not.

The violence wasn’t as bad as I expected. In fact, it wasn’t much worse than you would see on a Law & Order episode. I’d bet that the final scene in the ‘67 flick Bonnie & Clyde was bloodier.

If you love period pieces, this is a good film. If you have no interest, then you probably won’t like it.

If you know about John Dillinger’s story or want to learn more, this is a film that I would recommend.

Also, if you like slash… ;)

And now on to the slash couple that is my favorite (though you can slash more!):

Spoiler-free pimping of beautiful men )
bradygirl_12: (Purvis--Dillinger (Enemies?))
Okay, I’m going to pimp Public Enemies. What, you mean more than normal? ;) But I noticed that it’s in the ‘cheap theater’ around here and thought maybe it might be for others, too. If your ticket’s only 3 bucks or less, it’s worth seeing on the big screen, believe me. I know that people are waiting for the DVD or Netflix and that’s cool. I just think this film is well-suited to the big screen for action and scope.

I'm watching Robinson Crusoe right now on NBC and they keep emphasizing that Robin and Friday are like 'brothers'. Screw that! These two could be slashed easily! Chemistry, baby! ;)
bradygirl_12: (brady--beautiful)
The New England Patriots are playing their first game against the Kansas City Chiefs tomorrow, possibly in the remnants of a hurricane, though it might have passed by 1:00.

So a new season begins! Tom wasn't even listed on the injury report after all the speculation about his foot, and after being listed as 'probable' because of his shoulder the last four years. :) It was an inside joke that delighted we New England fans and disgruntled the NFL. ;)

Anyway, in observance of Opening Day, a look back at some football-slashy terms that I posted last year. It's worth looking at again, and will give you an inkling of why I love football so much! ;)
bradygirl_12: (superman--batman (cape sweep))
What, you thought we'd neglect the gentlemen? Ha! ;)

You have a new, sexy calendar to fill and the theme is 'Men Of The DCU All Year Long'. To spice things up, instead of one man per month, what twosome would you ask to pose? Yes, you can have a threesome or foursome if you can get them all together! ;) Any theme in particular you might like to use? Snow bunnies in January, or volleyball players in July? Description of the costumes or poses?

We're all busy people, so don't feel that you must fill in all twelve months! If any month or months strikes you, let's have your ideas! The BradyGirl Modeling Agency needs you! ;)

The above icon is in no way meant to influence your choices. ;)
bradygirl_12: (brady--beautiful)
This week was the Patriots’ bye week, so I thought that I would just list some football terms that makes my slashy heart glad:

tight end

open receiver

wide-open receiver (even better!)

slot receiver

penetrating the end zone

find the hole

hit the hole hard

go deep

go long

backfield in motion

sacking the quarterback

take a knee

wide left

wide right

straight through the uprights

up the seam

deep ball (and if we’re talking more than one, deep balls!)

pretty ball(s)

nice, tight spiral (of the ball as a ‘wounded duck’ is most likely to be intercepted)

(when it rains) wet balls ;)

ran right up his back

stay tight in the pocket

pocket passer

pocket presence

goose the center

he horse-collared that guy!

sucking wind

man-on-man coverage

happy feet

naked bootleg

take it to the house

go all the way

Today is the 41st anniversary of Star Trek's network premiere!

Considering how so many of us started in slash fandom via Kirk/Spock, I thought it would be appropriate to note the date. :)

How did you start in slash fandom? Which couple captured your imagination and led you to us in the wonderful world of slash? :)

Fic Tally

bradygirl_12: (world's finest group hug)
So how do my Muses work? I was curious as I was sitting here watching the Steelers versus the Eagles in a preseason contest, and so set about doing a little count. I could have broken things down into how many drabbles, short stories, etc., but I was too lazy. :) So the following is a mix of the aforesaid drabbles, short stories, fragments, ficlets, mega-epics. :) I tallied the primary pairing and made notes for secondary pairings. Other unusual notes are part of my curiosity. :) All fics listed are those that appeared on my LJ. I didn't include zine fics or archived work, but it's many of the same you see here in two archives I support, the Superman/Batman Archive and WWOMB.

My first post was on November 12, 2006 and my first fic, Announcement I: The Ready Room was posted on December 21, 2006.

I wasn't surprised to see my two top pairings as Clark/Bruce and Bruce/Dick. They are the ones who stir my Muses most often, and it was interesting to see just how often. All fics can be found in links here on my LJ.

Clark/Bruce -- 25

Bruce/Dick -- 19 I decided to include Twist Of Fate in the slash category, because if I ever get inspiration to continue this, Bruce and Dick are romantically involved at the beginning, but the story is so dark it even depresses me! so I have to really be in the mood to write it. It's not a deathfic, though it might be worse!

Bruce & Dick -- 3 These fics cover stories early in either Batman or Batman & Robin's career (Wee!Dick is so much fun to write!) or gen tales.

Steve/Diana -- 4 Happily this rare het pairing (for me, since I mainly write slash) has inspired me to write a nice little batch of fics. They are also mentioned in several other fics but take center stage here.

Clex -- 3

Apollo/Starbuck -- 3

Clark/Dick -- 2

Jim/Artie -- 2

Selina/Dinah -- 1 Two femslash stories feature women-only, and Dinah happens to be in both of them! :)

Diana/Dinah -- 1

Ollie & Dinah -- 1 This is pre-Ollie/Dinah.

Dick/Roy -- 1 I've only written one fic in which Dick/Roy star, but they are briefly mentioned in Sun, Sand, And Sea, mentioned more significantly in Forever And Always, and share time with Clark/Bruce in Heartland I: Truth, Justice, And The... I could count Heartland I: Truth, Justice, And The... twice but decided to just make a note of Dick/Roy in this story for now.

Clark/Dick/Bruce -- 1 This is a possible threesome. In The Age Of Heroes, it's not specified whether all three were in a romantic relationship, or if it was Clark/Dick, Bruce/Dick, Clark/Bruce or possibly none at all. It was an odd situation but it seemed to work for this story.

So it appears that my DCU Muses are working nicely, with some Apollo/Starbuck and Jim/Artie thrown in. My main pairings are Clark/Bruce and Bruce/Dick, and I've written some femslash and other DCU pairings. Ironically, Bruce is in two of my most frequent pairings and he is the most emotionally-challenged! :) Such is life, eh? ;)

As a fan of the original Battlestar Galactica, I've been enjoying repeats on the Ion network recently.  Spoilers for several episodes as I revel in the slash relationship between Apollo and Starbuck:
