Happy Canada Day to all of our friends up North! :)

My paternal grandmother was born on Prince Edward Island, so I've got some Canadian in me! ;)

I've also been on a Canadian kick since the Due South Archive was transferred to AO3 and I've been going through 154 records to reformat where I can, add tags, and break up the stories into chapters. I've been rereading the old stories and poems (I wrote a LOT of DS poetry!) and remembering the friends I made in that fandom, many of whom I'm still in contact with today.

The show aired on American TV from 1994-1996 and was revived for a 1998-1999 run. The show was quirky with subtle humor in the first two seasons, poking fun at Canadian and American stereotypes, and it became a hot fandom with the Benton Fraser/Ray Vecchio slash pairing. The show's subtext sometimes was more text! Ray bringing Benny home to meet his mother in the Pilot? Ray the only one to call him 'Benny'? Meeting in a closet at the Chicago Precinct to discuss strategy? Riiiight! Saving each other's lives? Dief (short for Diefenbaker), a deaf wolf who had saved Benny in the Yukon, welcoming Ray into the pack right away? I could go on and on! :)

The revival went on without David Marciano (Ray Vecchio), who was no longer available, so Callum Keith Rennie played Ray Kowalski as the new partner. Paul Gross (Benton Fraser) was given complete control (never give an actor complete control!). He wrote the scripts, starred in the show, and produced. The show's humor went from subtle to broad, and the tone was completely different. Kind of reminded me of the old '70s British SF series, Space: 1999, with Seasons 1 and 2 drastically different. Anyway, there are a lot of Fraser/Kowalski fans out there, but there are still Benny/Ray V. fans carrying the torch. The episodes, including the Pilot, can be found on YouTube.

Due South was one of the first fandoms to successfully straddle zines and on-line archives. During the show's first run, dozens of zines were published, not only in the U.S. but also Canada, the U.K., Australia, and New Zealand. Hundreds of stories were being uploaded to Hexwood (the old name for the DS Archive), and the show stayed hot for several years. I wrote the first Benny/Ray V. slash story (as Jeannie Marie) that appeared in a zine, The Straight And Narrow (the story title, not the zine title). :) In addition to the 154 stories and poems that I uploaded to Hexwood, I wrote dozens more for zines. A great creative time! :)

I also went to the DS con, RCW 139, in Toronto in '97, '98, and '99. I was the DMOB (David Marciano Oestregen Brigade) liaison to David Marciano in '98, and let me tell you, I've never seen more gorgeous green eyes! :) I continued DMOB duties in '99, but David was not a guest that year. I did bring Ray Doll in '98 and David got a big kick out of the knitted doll. :)

In '98, the Toronto Daily Mail published a story on slash fiction with Benny and Ray V. excerpts. I can only imagine what David thought reading the paper with his morning eggs! ;) But he's a very cool guy. Very courteous to the fans and a good sport, too.

I've finished 140 records and have 14 more to go! Whoo hoo! :)

Happy Canada Day to all our friends to the North! May it be a festive day! :)

How do Canadians celebrate their national holiday? Here in the U.S. it's with parades, cook-outs and fireworks. What's considered 'American foods' are hot dogs and hamburgers, and you add in potato salad, pasta salad, chips 'n' dips, and all sorts of goodies! :) You might get a band concert on the town common (and in Boston, it's a big show on the Esplanade). Lots of red-white-and-blue!

What are Canada's national foods? I know French fries with vinegar are popular (or were about fifteen years ago), and poutine. What is considered a quintessential Canadian dish?

I like the fact that in Niagara Falls, the two countries share a week of fireworks because their national holidays are so close together. :)

Happy Canada Day to all our friends up North! You have a beautiful country and I'm proud to be your neighbor. :)

Happy Canada Day to all of our friends to the North! :)

Yes, I know, I'm early, but I've got a bizzy day tomorrow so wanted to make sure to get my greetings in. :)

I've been thinking about communications. Yes, Uhura. :) The poll below reflects that and I find that each form has its advantages. Out of the tree, e-mail is my favorite as it gives me time to reflect and compose a message I feel comfortable with, while sometimes I can trip over my tongue on the phone, LOL!

As for texting, while I lament the truncation of the beautiful English language out of technical necessity, I find it handy in certain situations. For instance, my sister went to New York last Friday on the train and instead of eating up the minutes on our cell phones, we texted and had a lot of fun. I don't know how people can text and drive because texting demands total concentration! *shakes head*

I do miss writing letters. If you were around before the Internet, did you write letters or prefer telephoning? I liked letters for the same reasons I like e-mail and it was cheaper to buy a stamp than pay long-distance. :) I don't know how historians will function in the future because our communications are all electronic now and programs change and disappear, along with old e-mails. There's something lovely about a handwritten letter carefully crafted. Guess I'm just old-fashioned! :)

I put 'letter' as one of the choices for sentiment's sake, ha! I know that no one writes real letters anymore. :)

Hi, luvs! Did you have a good Canada Day and Fourth of July last week? :)

Bizzy at work today but with enough time to sneak in this entry. How do you like my newest icon? It was created by the talented [livejournal.com profile] ctbn60. You should totally go over to her journal and check out how many wonderful banners, icons, story covers, etc., that she has for display. The Man Of Steel icons are here and are absolutely gorgeous! :)

Is anyone else a Faora/Nathan fan? ;)

So, darlings, it's HOT as you-know-what here. Terrible weather. I can't get people who say they love hot, humid weather. People LIKE standing or sitting still and sweating? *shakes head*

Writing goes well. I finally might be able to post a few things later this week. If not, probably next week.

Happy Canada Day! :)

Yes, I know, I'm early, but I'm going to be INSANELY BIZZY tomorrow so don't know if I'll be able to log on.

Is it good to be insanely bizzy?

A great holiday to all our friends north of the border! :)

Good morning, all! Enjoying Canada Day and gearing up for the Fourth of July, I hope! North America is definitely celebrating this weekend! :)

My family often went to Niagara Falls during this week and it was fun to see both holidays celebrated with fireworks and the wonderful displays of color on the Falls. :)

And, another reason to celebrate! The SuperBat Big Bang is now open! Go and look and sign up! ;)

Sorry to hear about Leslie Nielson's passing. He grew up in Canada's Northwest Territories, and his father was a Mountie, which helped him in a guest role on Due South twice. His gift for comedy came as a surprise to people used to the dramatic actor of his early career, but it made him even more popular than ever.

TV's Police Squad, a cop show spoof, led to the Naked Gun movies and eventually Airplane!, and his comedic career was off and running!

He passed away from pneumonia at age 84.

RIP, Leslie.

Congrats to the Canadian team who won the men's gold medal in hockey! It was win-win for me, as I'm a U.S. citizen with Canadian heritage. :) It was an exciting game, one that went to overtime!

A little early, but who knows if I'll be on-line tomorrow?

So, Happy Canada Day to all the Canadians on my flist, and for those of us with Canadian blood, too! ;)

It's always a pleasure to celebrate such two important national holidays, Canada Day and the Fourth of July, so close together. Fitting, as our two countries are located next to each other. :)

O, Canada!

As a Due South fan and with Canadian blood, this is so kewl! :)

You're Canada!

People make fun of you a lot, but they're stupid because you've
got a much better life than they do.  In fact, they're probably just jealous.
You believe in crazy things like human rights and health care and not
dying in the streets, and you end up securing these rights for yourself and
others.  If it weren't for your weird affection for ice hockey, you'd be
the perfect person.

And I'm a big ice hockey fan! Curling, too! ;)

Happy Canada Day slightly early! :) To all those on my flist who live to the North, share the Canadian heritage, and to all those who admire and respect Canada, have a happy day!

BTW, the Mounties are a national symbol of Canada, and look what they export to us:

(Paul Gross as Benton 'Benny' Fraser of Due South)

Sigh. Dontcha just
Canada? ;)

Ray (David Marciano) just loves his Benny! ;)
