RIP, Nichelle Nichols & Bill Russell
Jul. 31st, 2022 06:41 pmTwo greats in the entertainment and sports worlds have left us: Nichelle Nichols and Bill Russell.
Both were trailblazers in their respective fields. Bill Russell won 11 NBA championships with the Boston Celtics in 13 years and we all know Nichelle was one of the first women to present a capable, dignified African-American character on television, and she recruited minorities for NASA. Russell was the first African-American head coach in the NBA (also with the Celtics) and was active in civil rights. The MVP trophy of the NBA Finals is named after him.
Happy Star Trek Day!!! :)
Sep. 8th, 2016 11:09 amHappy Star Trek Day, my friends! :)
Yep, today is the 50th anniversary of that groundbreaking pop culture phenomenon, Star Trek! It debuted on NBC this day 50 years ago and ran for three years, inspiring an animated series and three television spin-offs, six TOS movies, several ST:TNG movies, and the current Reboot. Even if a person hasn't watched a single second of any of the TV shows or movies, they're aware of who Kirk and Spock are, "Beam me up, Scotty!", and probably tribbles! :) It was the show with the first interracial kiss on TV (Kirk and Uhura in Plato's Stepchildren) and featured an integrated cast (though I Spy and Hogan's Heroes beat them out by a year, it was still a major thing in 1966). The show entered the cultural lexicon a long time ago and inspired people in real life to go into scientific careers and to join NASA. It helped create modern Fandom and kicked off the slash movement within that Fandom. You can thank K/S for the abundance of slash from all TV shows and movies today.
Enjoy the day, pet a tribble, play the Vulcan lyrette, and create your own adventure on the holodeck. Above all, live long and prosper, my friends! :)

RIP, Mr. Nimoy
Feb. 27th, 2015 06:15 pmVery sad news today. On the cusp of Star Trek's 50th anniversary, we lost Leonard Nimoy. :(
He had a full, rich life. Born in Boston's West End to Ukrainian Jewish parents, he was raised in a tenement and roamed the streets of Boylston and the Fens, selling newspapers as a boy. He saw the Red Sox play at Fenway Park and learned to row on the Charles River. He was a man of whom nothing negative was said of his character, and William Shatner called him the brother he never had.
I fell in love with Star Trek as a child and my love for the show has been with me all my life. It fueled dreams in me, and it brought me to modern fandom. My first slash love was Kirk/Spock, easy because of the depth of warmth and affection between the characters that we saw on a weekly basis. It was my 'gateway' fandom, as it was for so many. Through fandom I found my true outlet for creativity and made so many friends! I have been very happy in fandom all these years.
Star Trek and Mr. Spock is part of the cultural language and an actor could do a lot worse than be known for a character with such impact on so many people's lives. When you inspire people to become scientists and astronauts, you're doing pretty well. I can see The Big Bang Theory, which he guest-starred on, to come up something soon. :)
Rest in peace, Mr. Nimoy. You lived long and prospered.

Positive Meme (Day Three)
Oct. 21st, 2014 11:33 amWhoops, forgot I was doing this meme, LOL! Anyway, here are the happies for the day:
1) Color is everywhere! We're at peak color here and the trees and bushes are fantastic.
2) I bought a pumpkin to use in the building's pumpkin decorating contest. I might go with a Mr. Spock theme, not sure yet. :)
3) I got directions on where to vote. It'll be my first time at this polling place and the website's directions were awful. I asked the building manager and he was able to give me excellent directions. I like competent people!

Merry Midsummer!
Jun. 21st, 2013 06:58 pmHi, luvs! A Merry Midsummer to you all! :) Ironic that now that it's summer, we're in the dark half of the year as the days start to grow shorter.
It's been awhile since I updated you on the progress of my profic. The publishers want to offer my trilogy all at the same time, so I've been working on three novels, hence the longer time to see publication. Also, the company is a start-up and so they're making mistakes as we go along, too. It'll all get sorted out. :)
I also mentioned how many people were asking about my book, which I thank everyone! That keeps me as a viable author in their eyes and makes me feel good. :)
Fanfic remains a mix of old and new stories. The old stories are being polished up and the new ones are being written. I succumbed to a Man Of Steel plot bunny a little while ago, so eventually you'll see that. :)
My story for the 2013 Bruce/Dick Mini-Bang got stuck for awhile, as I had the basic idea but not sure of where to go with it. I do now and I'm sure I'll reach the 3,500-word limit. And who's interested in seeing more Natasha/Pepper? :) Oh, yeah, and a cracky fill for an
avengerkink prompt. ;) Believe it or not, you may see some Star Trek fic from me. I've had some stories finished for awhile but no time to edit. Time, time, wouldst that I could have more!

Drive-By Post
Apr. 26th, 2013 07:03 pmHi, luvs! Life has been terribly bizzy and will continue to be so for the foreseeable future, so don't expect me to be on-line as much as in the past. :) But I still have some time every day to check my mail and flist, and to slip in a few fics now and then on the ol' journal. ;)
As far as profic goes, the work is slow because it's been expanded, and FFP is a start-up with its own fits and starts. I thank everyone who are still interested. I hope that publication will be this year but who knows in the crazy publishing business? Anyway, I'm getting valuable experience.
Anticipation is half the fun, and that's what I'm feeling for Iron Man 3, The Great Gatsby and Star Trek 2: Into Darkness for the month of May. I expect nothing! I've been disappointed too many times in the past but have high hopes for at least Iron Man 3. I'm also anticipating Man Of Steel (very nervous about that one!), Thor 3: The Dark World, and The Lone Ranger. I'll consider Man Of Steel an Elseworld, like Smallville. My blood pressure will thank me! :)
Happily anticipating Captain America: The Winter Soldier, too, but I don't think that's due out 'til next year. I remember reading the comics as a kid and wanting to hug poor Cap, who mourned over Bucky, his best pal. Probably survivor's guilt mixed in with his PTSD, though they didn't call it PTSD at the time. I'll admit that I 'shipped Steve/Bucky as much as Steve/Tony way before any of the movies. :)
I'm not sure what to expect with The Lone Ranger. Frankly, it looks kind of weird. It's a sure bet that you'll have to throw out any notions of the old TV shows and movies with Clayton Moore and Jay Silverheels. A pity that the 1981 remake bombed so badly and now this one could do the same, but hopefully they'll rein in Johnny Depp and the film will be coherent. :)
Nice weather lately, with that special light you only get in April. I walked home from a meeting on Wednesday night and enjoyed seeing the full moon in all its glory.
Hope you're enjoying the fanfics I'm posting! I'm working my way through a batch that have been in my notebooks for quite awhile. :)

Feb. 26th, 2013 02:21 pmGoogle Chrome took about five hours to download, but it finally did. I just tested making an entry and then editing it. Looks like it works! I'll test again tonight.
Not liking the new editing interface and I'm gonna HATE the new friends list when they don't allow us to keep our own version. But, I'm back in the game (so far) and will probably start posting some stories that I was just not able to do in the past few weeks.
Quickie Oscar notes: loved Anne Hathaway getting an Oscar! She and Christian match now. ;)
Lovely gowns. But is it me or did the red carpet lack star power? Some recognizable stars but kind of meh, too.
Seth McFarland: not my cup of tea.
Bill Shatner as Jim Kirk: I enjoyed the bit! And he doesn't look bad for an 82-year-old guy, either. :)
I did like Argo winning Best Picture and Daniel Day-Lewis winning Best Actor for his portrayal of Abraham Lincoln, which I thought was outstanding.
LJ note: I might just post really long stories to A03 in the future. Stuff like the Big Bangs. Just too much aggravation doing it here now and with my poky dial-up...
I can easily import my bookmarks though I might hold off. A lot of them could be discarded and it's kind of cool to have a clean slate to just bookmark really important stuff. ;)
Tom Brady signed a VERY team-friendly contract, signing for less than half his market value in order to keep his team competitive (salary cap). That's my boy! :)
Thanks to all who gave me hugs during my travails. Always appreciated, as were the offers of help! *hugs you all* :)

Classic Fic Of The Month (May 2010)
Apr. 30th, 2010 10:58 amStar Trek returned in May of 2009 to the big screen, and this blend of TOS and XI popped into my head after watching a stunning scene in the movie: ...And The Bells Jingle Madly.
