Two greats in the entertainment and sports worlds have left us: Nichelle Nichols and Bill Russell.

Both were trailblazers in their respective fields. Bill Russell won 11 NBA championships with the Boston Celtics in 13 years and we all know Nichelle was one of the first women to present a capable, dignified African-American character on television, and she recruited minorities for NASA. Russell was the first African-American head coach in the NBA (also with the Celtics) and was active in civil rights. The MVP trophy of the NBA Finals is named after him.

Stanley Cup Finals Games 3,4, & 5 (The Cup Is In The Building!)

Stanley Cup Finals Game 3: Boston Bruins 2, Chicago Blackhawks 1 (2-1) (Monday, June 17, 2013)

Stanley Cup Finals Game 4: Chicago Blackhawks 6, Boston Bruins 5 (OT) (2-2) (Wednesday, June 19, 2013)

Stanley Cup Finals Game 5: Chicago Blackhawks 3, Boston Bruins 1 (Saturday, June 22, 2013) (2-3)

A quick recap of the last three games: in Game 3, the Bruins were dominant and came out with a win in Boston. In Game 4, both teams exploded with scoring and the Bruins lost a heartbreak in overtime. In Game 5, it was evenly matched but in the end, the Blackhawks took the win. Now the Stanley Cup will be in the building (the Boston Garden) but only for Chicago, because if the Blackhawks win, it’s all over. Needless to say, I’m hoping that the Cup is taken to Chicago. ;) Leave it to the Canadians: the guys who travel with the Cup and escort it into the building wear white gloves! ;) It’s the most beautiful trophy in all of sports! :)

The Greatest Hockey Player Of All Time, No. 4, Bobby Orr, will be in the house tonight as well! :)

Game 6: NBC at 8:00 P.M. tonight!

My sister and I reminded each other that today would have been Dad's birthday. Mom's would have been on July 29th. They were both New England sports fans and loved seeing the Patriots successful at the start of this incredible run for our sports teams. I wish they could have seen the Red Sox finally win and the Celtics win again after a long drought. We miss them every day. <:( It's also Jean de Baptiste Day in Montreal! :)

Today Jason Collins, a former Boston Celtic, announced that he was gay. It was an historic announcement because no U.S. player has ever come out while still actively playing. Usually they are retired. And it's one of the four major team sports, basketball, instead of a non-team sport like swimming or tennis or golf, for instance. He is not a Big Name but has been in the NBA for a dozen years and is well-liked and described as 'classy' and 'a gentleman'. He's a free agent, so it'll be interesting to see who he signs with next season. Now that one has taken the first step, others will follow. Read about it here.

The parade for the Boston Bruins was spectacular! The weather was gorgeous, and the crowds were estimated to be close to a million. The Boston Police said it was the biggest parade our City of Champions has had yet. It was a sea of black-and-gold! The players rode in duckboats (used on the Charles River for tours but able to convert into vehicles for the streets) and the Stanley Cup took center stage. Lots of kids and families and no problems despite the huge crowds. If you're interested in seeing pix, sites like boston.com has some, and the major newspapers like the Globe and the Herald. Probably weei.com, too (sports talk radio).

Tomorrow the Bruins will be honored at Fenway Park before the Red Sox game. All the four major teams honor each other's achievements, and all four coaches currently coaching are championship coaches. Bruins coach Claude Julien said that the other coaches had sent him encouraging messages during the playoffs.

It was New England's seventh championship parade in ten years. Not bad, eh? ;)

THEY DID IT!!!!!

The Boston Bruins took home the Stanley Cup after 39 years! Whoo hoo! *dances*

The fireworks went off last night after the win. The city of Boston had thousands of people in the streets, and only six arrests for minor disturbances.

The Bruins came out and scored first, then second, then third (Bergeron sliding into the net!) and fourth (empty net goal). They fought hard and they're coming back home to a parade on Saturday, where they will ride the duckboats through the city with that beautiful, gorgeous Cup shining its silver glory.

There is nothing quite like that pure, unalloyed moment in which you know your team has won it all. We've enjoyed 7 championships here in the last 10 years: the Patriots in '01, '02, and '03; the Red Sox in '04 and '07, the Celtics in '08, and now the Bruins. The Bruins won three Game 7s in this playoffs, and were only the third team in history to win a Game 7 ON THE ROAD!

I woke up this morning with a big smile on my face. It's glorious to savor in this championship. Bobby Orr and the Big, Bad Bruins will always be legends in this town, but now there are new legends wearing the black-and-gold. The Bruins wanted to join the 21st century pantheon of winners here in the city, and they did it! They wanted duckboat rides, too. ;)

What a sight to see our 6'9" defenseman lift that Cup over his head, and for Tim Thomas to get the Conn Smythe MVP Trophy and lift the Cup, too.

Weird facts: the last time there was a lunar eclipse was October of 2004, the night the Red Sox won the World Series. Also, the last time a tornado went through Springfield, the Bruins won the Stanley Cup in 1972. *cue Twilight Zone music*

Every major sports team has won a championship in the last ten years. Never been done before!

This team has HAAAAAHT! (translated from New England accent: heart). ;)

Cue up Queen's "We Are The Champions!!!"

Alas, my Celtics didn't have enough left in 'em to push past those final four points. Congrats to Lakers fans!

I was really bummed last night. You sweat bullets in each of these playoff games, and it's a killer not to win at the end. :(

Yesterday was such a great day, too! I was bouncing off the walls, eating blueberries I'd gotten on sale at the market (buy one pint, get two free!) and thrilled that [livejournal.com profile] siriusfanatic had written a sequel to her When I'm With Him, I Am Thinking Of You, and generally enjoying the cool weather we've been having. Then the tense game and the Celtics tanking! And to the bitter rival Lakers, no less! Very bummed.

Well, as you can see, no spam today! ;) I decided to smoosh all the chapters together since I had to post them all in the same day for [livejournal.com profile] lgbtfest, anyway. I had a good time writing Gossamer Wings because I'm a sucker for hurt/comfort, especially as I like to add in quite a bit of comfort to the hurt. :) I also enjoy writing about people who love each other despite pain.

Wow, last night Celtics' game was amazing! The bench players came out in the fourth quarter and kicked butt! Big Baby, Nate, Tony, 'Sheed...the second unit really energized the team! The Garden was rockin'! Series tied at two! Woot! :)
bradygirl_12: (shamrock (classic))
The Kryptonite's still working against 'Superman' Dwight Howard! ;)

The Boston Celtics take the second ROAD game away from the Orlando Magic tonight! Woot!
bradygirl_12: (shamrock (classic))
The Boston Celtics have just dispatched King James and the Cleveland Cavaliers in a MAJOR UPSET!!!

It was a team effort all the way, baby! Paul Pierce, Kevin Garnett, Ray Allen, Rajon Rondo, Big Baby Davis, Tony Allen, Kendrick Perkins, Rasheed Wallace...all the pundits chose LeBron James and the Cavs and the Celtics won with team defense and a sparkin' offense! Woot! Playoff tickets for the Eastern Conference Finals go on sale tomorrow! :)

Bring on the Orlando Magic! :)

P.S. Bill Belichick got a HUGE ovation when shown on the Jumbotron. We luv our Super Bowl-winning coach! ;)

Hmm, feeling a little restless. I have been writing some dark stuff so am thinking of writing a little Steve/Diana sparkle. :) If you ever get bogged down by gloom 'n' doom, I can really recommend writing these two. They even make a Friday night eating pizza romantic! ;)

*shifty eyes as she hopes for fic* LOL! But, seriously, there are couples out there that just make you smile as you write them. :)

I am pleased at the responses to the Inspiration Meme. It's very cool to see how your work can inspire others. Thanks, [livejournal.com profile] vocallight and [livejournal.com profile] milleniumrex! :)

More NFL Draft tomorrow! The Celtics play the Bulls again, and the Bruins dispatched the Canadiens a few nights ago. The Red Sox shellacked the Yankees today at Fenway, 16-11.

It's good to be a New England sports fan right now. :)

Return To Glory! Game 6: Boston Celtics 131, Los Angeles Lakers 92 (4-2) (Tuesday, June 17, 2008)

Well, the Celtics hit the pot o' gold at the end of the NBA rainbow, my friends! In the second quarter they took over the game and never looked back! Rajon Rondo, just 3 1/2 months old when the Green last won a championship in 1986, was outstanding, buzzing around the ball, stealing it and making baskets like there was no tomorrow. Paul Pierce played decoy and still got 17 points. Kevin Garnett came alive and played like the superstar he is. James Posey befuddled Kobe Bryant, and on and on...

The Celtics kept up the pressure even when they were up 30 points! Their defense was stifling, and their offense sparkling enough to take that big lead. The Lakers were soft on defense, something they'll have to address next season. The Celtics won by the largest margin every in the NBA Finals! 39 points!

The Gahden was jumpin'! :) People who remembered the glory days and those tasting them for the first time were excited. Green was everywhere! Fans stood practically the whole game, and the chants were boisterous and loud. Celebration after the win outside the Garden was orderly enough that they were few arrests. Pity in today's society you need riot police after a championship win, but there you go.

Bill Russell, winner of 11 championships, was there, and so was John Havlicek, No. 17, as the Celtics clinched their 17th championship on June 17th, Bunker Hill Day. :) Other Celtic greats were working radio and TV, Cedric Maxwell and Tommy Heinsohn. Celebrities in the crowd included Bill Belichick, Steven Tyler, and more! Not L.A. glitter, but we'll take our New England crowd. :)

The only thing missing was Red Auerbach lighting up a victory cigar, but I'm sure if heaven allows it, he was lighting up in the final minutes! ;)

Any fan of a professional sports team knows that when your team wins it all, there's nothing quite like that moment when you clinch it: pure and sparkling and joyous.

The parade in Boston is tomorrow! :)

Congrats to the fans who stuck it out during the lean years (including me!) and to the players and organization that got this done. The Lakers brought us to six, so Lakers fans can look forward to good things, though that defense needs shoring up! :)

Thanks to all for reading my sports blathering! ;)

This win really cheered me up after a rough day yesterday.

Game 5: Los Angeles Lakers 103, Boston Celtics 98 (3-2) (Sunday, June 15, 2008)

Well, apparently the Celtics can only start a game in the Finals after digging themselves a huge hole! They came back once again and even took the lead, but couldn't hold it.

Paul Pierce played his heart out, and Kevin Garnett was awful last night. Due to early foul trouble, he couldn't play the minutes he should have. Yeesh!

So, the series comes back to Boston for Game 6 this Tuesday. I hope home cookin' does the trick this time! :)
bradygirl_12: (shamrock (classic))
One never knows in sports what will happen, so I'm not 100% certain that the Celtics will wrap up No. 17 tonight, but they could! Certainly they have a lot of confidence after that historic comeback on Thursday. :)

I'm going to be signing off earlier than usual tonight to concentrate on the game and have some dinner, but until then, plot bunnies are nibbling! Ideas are whirling! ;)

Still more fic to come, as I have a lot written and just need to revise and type it all!

Random thoughts: I'll be thinking about my Halloween Challenge this summer. If that was the only Challenge I did all year, that would be the one, because I love Halloween! :) I want to get people all excited about it when I post it in a few months, so I must have thinky thoughts 'til then! ;)

My birthday (in September) is on a Saturday this year! Excellent! Birthdays are always so much more fun on weekends, aren't they? :)

My beloved New England Patriots will be starting training camp in July. I'll probably have to cut back on the trips (gas prices are just ridiculous!) but I intend to go at least once and see my boys in action. Yep, they blew the perfect season big-time last year, but they're still my boys. Fans here will gripe and groan but we'll stick with our teams and circle the wagons. *luvs Tom Brady* ;)

I'll also be thinking of something to do to commemorate the first anniversary of [livejournal.com profile] wonderwomanlove, which coincidentally, is the same day as my birthday (September 27th). :) We have a very eclectic collection of entries over there. Check out the latest entry for the June Challenge. Simply lovely!

*thinks happy thinky thoughts*

Game 4: Boston Celtics 97, Los Angeles Lakers, 91 (Thursday, June 12, 2008)

Quite the game last night! At first it looked like one of those nights for the Celtics: every shot they took in the first quarter clanked off the rim, and the Lakers were hitting everything in sight. Eventually the lead for L.A. built up to 24 points! And they would also have a lead of 21 points in the third quarter with about five minutes left.

Was there temptation to shut off the game in disgust? Yeah, but I don’t quit on my teams, even when they stink! :) If I could listen to the games on the radio last year when the team (very different with a lot of kids instead of the veterans they have now) only won 24 games, I can tough it out in the Finals.

And, while no team had ever come back from such a deficit in NBA Finals history, well, it was a possibility, as the Lakers had come back from a 20-point deficit in Game 2, but they ran out of gas. I figured if the Celtics could make a run at that deficit, they’d probably run out of gas, too, since you expend so much energy trying to dig yourself out of a hole.

Chip, chip, chip.

Suddenly, it was a lead for the Lakers that was in the single digits! The Celtics were coming back, and finally were within two points. The Lakers went up by four, but then the Celtics came roaring back and were ahead! And they stayed ahead, even though their largest lead was five points until the very end, when they won by six.

Amazing! The greatest comeback in the history of the NBA Finals!

I was cheering as the Witching Hour approached! Whoo hoo! The Celtics are 48 minutes away from No. 17!

Paul Pierce came alive after a horrendous Game 3, and his defense of Kobe Bryant was stellar. Ray Allen played all 48 minutes of the game and had a sweet lay-up in the final minutes to cement the win. Where the heck were the Lakers when he was driving to the basket? Kevin Garnett was awesome in the low post. We had injuries, with Rajon Rondo still not 100%, and Kendrick Perkins injuring his shoulder. Paul hurt his ankle but he stayed in. He was stabbed 11 times back in 2002 at a nightclub and came back two weeks later to play, so I doubt a painful knee and ankle will keep him out of this.

Will the series return to Boston? Possibly, but I’m feeling good that the Celtics can wrap this thing up on Sunday in L.A. *bounces* :)

Game 3: Los Angeles Lakers 87, Boston Celtics 81 (2-1) (Tuesday, June 10, 2008)

Not surprisingly, Boston lost last night. The NBA is a very home court-advantage league. What gives me hope is that they came back from a large deficit and nearly tied the game at the end on the road. Our stars, Paul Pierce and Kevin Garnett could not buy a basket last night while L.A.'s star Kobe Bryant ended up with 36 points.

Hopefully Game 4 will be a different story, but at least the game was entertaining! :)

Game 2: Boston Celtics 108, Los Angeles Lakers 102 (2-0) (Sunday, June 8, 2008)

Well, Game 2 at the Gah-den was exciting! :)

In the first half the Celtics were more dominant but still hadn't pulled away to any commanding degree. That would occur in the third quarter when at one point they had a 20-point lead on the Lakers. Their defense was dominant and Leon Powe, a player off the bench, had the game of his life with 21 points in 15 minutes. He also took more free throws than the entire Lakers team! :)

The Celtics let down late in the fourth quarter, however, and let the Lakers get to within 2 points with about 30 seconds left! Fortunately they held them off and hopefully learned a valuable lesson!

Game 3 is tonight at the Staples Center in L.A.

Game 1: Boston Celtics 98, Los Angeles Lakers, 88 (1-0) (Thursday, June 5, 2008)

The Celtics won the first game of the seven-game series last night, 98-88. The Boston Garden was rockin' (No native really calls it the TD Banknorth Garden. It's a new arena but it's still known by the old arena's name. And it's pronounced 'Gah-den'. ;) ).

There was drama a-plenty as it looked as if Paul Pierce, our best player and scorer, might be done with a knee injury. He was carried off in the third quarter and put in a wheelchair to go to the dressing room, but returned soon after. It's a knee sprain and may keep him out of the rest of the series, but who knows at this point? He came back, the crowd roared, and he promptly hit two three-point baskets in a row, the momentum coming back to the Celtics and staying with them as a close game ended with them as the victors.

The New England Patriots usually support the Celtics (all the major teams support each other) and Randy Moss was sighted at the game.

It was an exciting game and lots of fun to watch! Kevin Garnett (K.G.) was awesome, and the rest of the Celts really did well. Let's hope they keep it up for Game 2! :)

Over at Fenway Park, there was a brawl on the field and a dust-up in the dug-out. Busy night all around! :)

The old rivalry of the '80s is back! The Boston Celtics and the Los Angeles Lakers are going at it for the NBA Championship beginning at 9:00 EDT tonight on ABC.

It's been a long drought for the chance at No. 17 for the Celtics, and I'm going to watch every minute of these Finals! I remember the glory days, and I want them back! :)

So, I may be on tonight after Smallville and watch the game while I type, or just write in the notebook while I watch. Either way, I'll be busy! :)

Go, Celtics! :)
bradygirl_12: (Default)
Well, the health update: my wrist and arm are still strained but getting better. I had to shovel a lot of snow (and I expect more to come this Sunday) and had strained my shoulder the first snowfall a few weeks ago. Apparently it'll make it easy to strain each time I shovel. I'm in pain here for my art, people! ;) I am taking some aspirin and might rub a nice little potion on it tonight when I go to bed. :)

Typing is still painful but if I do it slowly, it's okay. I have too many fics I owe to not type, but it'll be slower than I anticipated.

I'm looking forward to Sunday's game at Foxboro. While I would have loved to see a clear day so that the Patriots could have put up 70 points on the Jets, snow games at the stadium are always magical, and their record is perfect in the snow at home. California native Tom Brady seems to find the snow no problem a'tall! :)

The Celtics have the best record in basketball (18-2) and unbeaten at the Garden. I'm listening to the game on the radio and it looks like they might get No. 19 tonight. EDIT: They did! Whoo hoo! ;)

I am typing, then reading, then typing, etc., and it seems to be working out well. :) I got a burst of creativity for my second World's Finest Gift Exchange fic and even finally got an idea as to how to write the third. I'm also working on "Family II: Christmas Eve". I need a scorecard to keep that crowd straight (so to speak)! ;)

Week 8: New England Patriots 52, Washington Redskins 7 (8-0) (October 28, 2007)

The Patriots’ Express just keeps rollin’ along. :)

Today, Tom threw for 3 more touchdown passes, making a total of 30 on the season, passing his old personal record FOR A SEASON by two, and it’s only Week 8! He ran for two touchdowns, too. And back-up QB Matt Cassel ran for one late in the fourth quarter.

Mike Vrabel, linebacker extraordinaire, caught a touchdown pass and caused a fumble that created a fellow linebacker’s opportunity to score a defensive touchdown. The Redskins’ vaunted defense couldn’t do much against the New England boys.

This is an historic offense, breaking all records (for the 8th game in a row, they have scored on their first possession) and rolling along, putting up an average of 41 points a game.

The Red Sox may clinch their second World Series title in two years tonight (pinch me, I must be dreaming!) the Celtics are relevant again, the Boston College Eagles are No. 2 in the country, and even the freakin’ New England Revolution soccer team are in the MLS playoffs. The Bruins? Well, I love hockey, but I hate what the owner and management has done with this proud Original Six franchise. At least the player who was carted off the ice after a vicious hit yesterday isn’t paralyzed! He’s going to be all right.

So it’s just all good here in New England in the sports world. And, oh, yeah, Tom is gorgeous, too! ;)
